How important is XAMPP for a Web developer?
Unless you install XAMPP or any other server – you won’t be able to perform the below actions:
1. Install and run any of the Content Management Systems(CMS) like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Silverstripe etc
2. Cannot connect to Database Cannot Write or Retrieve anything related to Database
3. You cannot run or test PHP ridden websites locally etc
Why XAMPP is the most loved one for any Web developer?
- It is free for use with full functionality
- It is very much user friendly than other of that kind
- Very straight forward and easy to operate
- XAMPP includes PHP, PERL and MySQL database manager
- Tools like Webalizer, OpenSSL and PHPmyAdmin will also be installed
Those were some of the positive sides of Xampp – I’ll take you through every single step required to successfully install the latest stable version as of August 2013 [XAMPP 1.8.1-VC9] on a Windows system.
Step 1: Download the free copy of the latest version of XAMPP here.
Step 2: Right click on the .exe file and the system will ask you if you want to run the program or not. If you are an administrator, just click on Run button it will run or else if you are a one of the regular user – it may ask you for the administrator permission.
Step 3: Once authenticated – the below screen will be show to you and you can proceed by clicking on the next button.
Step 4: Once you clink on the next button – It will ask you to select some of the components that you might want XAMPP to install. By default few components will be checked. If not checked – please go ahead and check all the components that you might want.
No issues for newbies – you can just leave the default checked items. It will still work for you!
Step 5: As the next step – XAMPP will ask for the path to get itself installed. By default it will access your C drive’s root i.e. C:\ .
You can even select different directories and install it. But, its strictly advised to install in onto your C drive – because of it is the most secured drive on your systems.
Step 6: The below screen shot tells you that you can use XAMPP and Install CMS like WordPress, Drupal etc… Note there is a note below with a check box – If you check it, it will take you to there website. If you don’t want – just do not check it and click on the next button.
Step 7: Now the screen says that the software is ready to install on your system with the options, components and path that you have selected. This is just a confirmation phase, so do not panic – just click on the next button again.
Step 8: Once you click on the next button – It will start the installation and you can see the progress bar with green color filled. Wait until the green color fills through the progress bar.
Step 9: Once the green bar fills fully – It says that installation is completed. If completed – it will show you the below screen and also shows you the Finish button. It also asks you that if you want to start the XAMPP control panel when you click on the Finish button. If you wish you can check that OR if you plan to run it late – that’s fine.
Better – you check/select that option.
Step 10: If you opted to show the control panel upon clicking finish button – you should see the below screen. The below screen is the opening or welcome screen of XAMPP control panel.
You can see there are several controls towards the left most and towards the right most. You need not worry about the right most controls at this moment. Please go to the next step to see what you have do next.
